How MYSTEP Can Help Graduates Kickstart Their Careers
Are you a graduate looking for your first job? Let’s Start with MYSTEP
The issue of graduate employability is one of the issues that is being taken seriously by the government. In 2022 alone, 29,000 graduates were still unemployed six months after their graduation.
If this problem is not addressed, we fear that the interest of future generations in continuing their education will diminish. They may feel that pursuing further education is pointless if there are no job opportunities for them.
Therefore, one of the government’s actions to help graduates find employment after graduation is the launch of the ‘Malaysia Short-term Employment Programme’ or MySTEP.
Through the MySTEP program, graduates can get short-term (contract) employment opportunities in various Ministries, Government Agencies, Government-Linked Companies (GLC), Government-Linked Investment Companies (GLIC), and Strategic Partners.
The MySTEP program is open to all Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above. For graduates with a Diploma, the starting salary is RM1,800, while graduates with a Bachelor’s Degree are offered a starting salary of RM2,100.
Benefits of MySTEP for Graduates:
The most important thing for graduates is to get their first job and gain as much experience as possible from it. By working in the government sector, large companies in GLC and GLIC, graduates can gain experience from the involvement in large projects and learn about the ins and outs of job management from more experienced employees.
Accumulated experience can be used as a portfolio and enhance the skills and competencies of graduates to secure better jobs in the future. The MySTEP program can serve as a stepping stone to propel graduates’ careers in the long term.
It is well-known that candidates with experience and skills have an advantage over graduates without experience and are more likely to get a job compared to candidates without experience and skills.
